A Bulgarian business delegation will be participating in the next Macfrut (Rimini, May 8-10, 2024). Expo Business Partner Marina Evtimova talks about the development of fruit and vegetable production in Bulgaria and what companies are looking for.
“In Bulgaria, companies produce almost all types of fruits and vegetables that can be found on the shelves of supermarkets and wholesale markets. In recent years, exports have also increased. For example, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, cauliflower, etc. In addition to Greece, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland, grapes, watermelons, stone fruits and strawberries are being sent to the UK, Belarus, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. ”
Approximately 100 produce companies use Expo Business Partner to expand their network and reach new markets.
Bulgarian fruits and vegetables are especially known on European markets for their taste. For many years, Bulgaria has been successful in the markets of Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Hungary and other European countries. One of the obstacles to our development is fragmentation. “Cultivation takes place on a small area and a wide variety of species are grown, which makes it difficult to form homogeneous lots for export,” continues Marina Eftimova.
“Another problem is that the cost of cultivation is increasing in many ways. The growing period in greenhouses is being delayed in order to save the energy needed for heating. The new generation of energy-saving greenhouses , which could be of great benefit to farmers.”
Despite these problems, vegetable exports have been growing in recent years. “Legumes, potatoes, greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers have relatively good competitiveness in foreign markets. The main problem in exports is the increase in logistics costs.Recently, Bulgaria has started export procedures to the East '' said the spokesperson.
“The main interest in participating in Macfrut is to introduce our products to foreign buyers. Macfrut is also a famous trade fair for us and to find new commercial partners,” concludes Marina Eftimova. I did.
