The Minister of Construction and Transport said on Monday in the city of Mako that the government considers the development of southeastern Hungary a priority.
Speaking at a press conference in the town's industrial park, János Lázár said the government aims to develop an industrial area similar to the cities of Miskolc, Debrecen and Nyiregyháza near Szeged in southern Hungary. “This is so that we can establish ourselves as a great city.” A prosperous and developing city.”
He said the government is working to implement infrastructure development related to Chinese car manufacturer BYD's investment near Szeged. He said hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on connecting car factories to highways, building a railway between Budapest and Szeged, and developing drinking water and wastewater systems to meet the factory's needs. The government will also ensure that gas and electricity supply capacity meets standards, he said.
He said the investment would benefit the entire region. Mako and Szeged are connected by a highway, and the government is considering rebuilding the railway network and building a suburban railway with Szeged, he added.
Mako's industrial park currently serves 50 companies but needs to be expanded to meet demand, in addition to the 3 billion HUF water system renovation already underway, Lazar said.
He added that a subsidiary of China's COFCO Packaging is investing $27.5 billion to build a packaging factory in the park.
Lazar said that China is the biggest investor in Hungary, and that the Budapest-Belgrade rail line will be the first in the EU to have Chinese signaling and safety systems operating on a European rail system. It added that it was a “pilot project.”
Lazar said Mako was a “great ally of the Hungarian government” and that the past few years had seen significant development in tourism and industry, as well as upgrades to local spas.
