Quantum computing machines operate at the subatomic level and use exotic technologies such as ultracold superconductor chips. IBM (IBM) and alphabet(GOOGL) Google uses superconducting technology.
In 2021, honeywell international (HON) has merged its Quantum Solutions business with Cambridge Quantum to form Quantinuum. The company uses “trapped ion” quantum computing technology.
Additionally, as of 2024, Honeywell will be Quantinum's largest shareholder, owning approximately 54% of the company's stock.
Quantinuum and Microsoft said the results include “quantum error correction.”
Advances in quantum computing
Traditional computers use electronic circuits to store information as digital 0s and 1s. Quantum computing uses quantum physics to speed up complex calculations. Quantum computers use quantum bits, called qubits, instead of classical computational bits that are either 0 or 1.
A qubit can be in the 0, 1, or both states at the same time. This allows quantum computers to perform many calculations simultaneously. Qubits are also linked to other qubits, a property known as entanglement.
However, today's quantum computers are sensitive to changes in temperature, noise, motion, and electromagnetic fields. Additionally, disturbances can cause the quantum state of the qubit to collapse.
Meanwhile, market research firm Gartner predicts that by 2025, the top 50% of automakers, banks, and pharmaceutical companies will be “involved in quantum-inspired initiatives.”
Public quantum computing companies include: D-wave (QBTS), Righetti (RGTI), ion Q (IONQ) and quantum computing (QUBT).
Cloud computing giants such as Amazon Web Services Amazon.com (AMZN) will provide access to quantum computing technology for pilot projects.
On the stock market today, Microsoft stock rose slightly to around 422.
